    WNMU Draft Withdrawal Policy

The Instructional Resource Committee will advise the University Librarian in the revision of a withdrawal policy for Miller Library.

    Monographs

    1. Academic departments have the primary responsibility for deselection decisions within their areas of the circulating collection.
    2. The Public Services Library Manager may suggest titles for deselection from the circulating collection as part of the collection development process. The Manager may ask for input from Reference, Circulation, ILL, and Technical Services staff. The department chair in the relevant subject area will receive a list of these titles for approval. If the department chair doesn’t respond within 30 days, the titles will be withdrawn.
    3. As new editions supercede titles in the reference collection, older editions may be added to the circulating collection or withdrawn from the library. The Reference Librarian will make this decision.
    4. Faculty and the WNMU community will be given first consideration in the distribution of withdrawn titles. Withdrawn titles will be housed in Technical Services for 30 days for WNMU employees to browse. In accordance with state law, materials selected by WNMU employees remain property of WNMU, not of the individuals.
    5. The list of withdrawn materials will reside on the Miller Library Web site under the Cataloging unit.
    6. After 30 days, other institutions may request withdrawn materials be sent to them for no charge other than the cost of postage.
    7. The remainder of withdrawn materials may be donated to the library at Universidad Regional del Norte in Chihuahua or may be auctioned by bid lots through the WNMU Maintenance Dept.

    Periodicals

    1. Academic departments have the primary responsibility for deselection decisions within their subject area of the periodicals collection.
    2. The Public Services Library Manager may suggest titles for deselection from the periodicals collection as part of the collection development process. The Manager may suggest dropping titles from the current list of periodicals received or withdrawing bound copies of titles no longer received. Recommendations will be made to departments through the IRC representative. The Manager may ask for input from Reference, Circulation, ILL, and Technical Services staff.
    3. Paper issues superceded by microform will be withdrawn.
    4. As new issues supercede issues held in the reference collection, older issues may be added to the circulating collection or withdrawn from the library. The Reference Librarian will make this decision.
    6. The list of withdrawn materials will reside on the Miller Library Web site under the Cataloging unit.
    7. After 30 days, other institutions may request withdrawn materials be sent to them for no charge other than the cost of postage.
    8. The remainder of withdrawn materials may be donated to the library at Universidad Regional del Norte in Chihuahua or may be auctioned by bid lots through the WNMU Maintenance Dept.
